At a glance
- One integrated terminal. You arrive, transfer and depart in the same building. Transfer halls are at Concourses A, B, C and D. [S1]
- Home airline: Qatar Airways (oneworld). Its destination company, Discover Qatar, runs the paid transit tours. [S1][S3]
- Airside hotel and pods: Oryx Airport Hotel and Sleepover (formerly Sleep 'n Fly) are both airside. [S5][S6]
Minimum connection times
- Not published on the airport's transfer page. The airport says gates close 20 minutes before departure. [S1]
- Qatar Airways' own minimum connection time wasn't confirmed on an official page, so check with your airline.
- Our guidance (not an official rule): 60–90 minutes on one ticket. The longest airport walk between concourses is about 14 minutes (see below). [S1]
Terminals and transfers
- Leaving the aircraft, go straight to the Transfer hall. Don't follow "Arrivals" signs unless you're leaving the airport. If you want to exit on a long layover, ask at a transfer desk. [S1]
- Hand baggage is screened before you enter the terminal. [S1]
- Published walking times from the transfer halls: 1–14 minutes depending on concourse. For example, Transfer A to A1 is 1 min; Transfer A to D24 is 11 min; Transfer D or E to A10/A11 is 14 min. Distances run up to about 1,135 m. [S1]
- You don't need a transit visa if you don't leave the airport. [S1]
Transit visas
US passport holders
- Per Visit Qatar (the government tourism site), US citizens get a visa on arrival. It's valid for two years, or until the passport expires, for multiple entries with each stay up to 90 days. You need a passport valid at least 3 months from arrival and a confirmed hotel booking. [S2]
- Check with your airline: we couldn't confirm whether US citizens pay a fee for this. Visit Qatar describes "visa-free entry" as the new name for what used to be called "visa on arrival." [S2]
Philippine passport holders
- The Philippines is on Visit Qatar's list of nationalities that must pay a fee for a visa on arrival or apply for a tourist visa before travel. Hayya e-visas cost QAR 100. [S2]
- Check with your airline: we couldn't confirm whether Philippine nationals can get the paid visa on arrival in practice, or must apply in advance on Hayya (A1). Check the Visit Qatar visa checker for your passport before you fly. [S2]
- Transit visa for tours: Qatar Airways passengers with a layover of 6+ hours who aren't eligible for visa-free entry can apply for a transit visa (QAR 100) at the Discover Qatar Transit Tour desk, to join a transit tour. Visas are approved at the sole discretion of Qatar's Ministry of Interior. [S2][S3]
- Visit Qatar also mentions a transit visa valid for up to 4 days for longer stays. Terms apply. [S2]
Leaving the airport and transit tours
There's no free city tour. Discover Qatar's transit tours are paid.
- Discover Doha (shared coach, 3 hours): you need 6 hours of transit time. Departures are daily at 08:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00. Meet 90 minutes before the tour; allow 60 minutes after the tour before boarding. The tour visits the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village and Souq Waqif. Price: QAR 115 (listed Oct 2026). [S3]
- Meeting point: the Discover Qatar Transit Tour desk in Duty Free Plaza South, behind the escalators between Concourses A and B. If you've already cleared immigration, go to the Discover Qatar desk in the Arrivals Hall. [S3]
- Other options (6+ hours): a 4-hour desert and inland sea tour, a museum and beach shuttle, a 45-minute scenic flight, and a private car with chauffeur ("Discover Doha Your Way"). 4-hour layovers: an airport-based art tour. [S1]
- Don't buy alcohol in duty-free before a tour. Bringing it into Qatar is prohibited, and Discover Qatar won't store it. [S3]
- If entry is refused despite meeting the requirements, Discover Qatar refunds the tour. [S3]
Lounges and sleep
- Oryx Airport Hotel: airside, for transit passengers who don't clear immigration. The airport says you can book stays as short as 5 hours. [S1][S5]
- Sleepover (formerly Sleep 'n Fly): private sleeping pods and rooms, airside. [S6]
- Quiet rooms: free, with recliners and soft lighting. [S1][S7]
- Lounges: access may come with your ticket or loyalty status, or you can pay for it. Details are on the airport's lounge pages. [S1]
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal. [S1]
Layover ideas by length
Editorial suggestions, not official guidance.
- Under 6 hours: stay airside. Use the quiet rooms, Sleepover pods, or Oryx for 5+ hours. Layovers of 4+ hours can take the airport art tour. [S1]
- 6–12 hours: Discover Doha (3 h, QAR 115) fits if your passport allows entry. Philippine passports would need the QAR 100 transit visa. [S3]
- Overnight: Oryx Airport Hotel airside, no visa needed [S5]. Or, if eligible, enter Doha. US citizens need a confirmed hotel booking. [S2]
Pitfalls
- Hotel booking requirement: US visitors need a confirmed hotel booking on arrival per Visit Qatar, even for a short entry. [S2]
- Gate closes 20 minutes before departure. [S1]
- Philippine passports: confirm the visa route (paid visa on arrival vs Hayya in advance) before you plan to leave the airport. [S2]
- Tour timing: you lose 90 minutes before and 60 minutes after the tour to processing. [S3]
