Dallas/Fort Worth to San Francisco: the domestic leg before a transpacific flight

Last checked

When this leg makes sense

  • DFW already has nonstops to Asia: American and Japan Airlines to Tokyo Haneda, plus Cathay Pacific and EVA Air (see Dallas/Fort Worth to Tokyo and Dallas/Fort Worth to Hong Kong).
  • Position through SFO when the flight you want leaves from San Francisco. SFO has nonstops to Manila (Philippine Airlines, United), Taipei (China Airlines, EVA Air, STARLUX, United), Tokyo Haneda (ANA, JAL, United), Tokyo Narita (ANA, JAL, United, ZIPAIR), Hong Kong, Singapore and more [S1].

Flying it: nonstop options

  • SFO's official nonstop list shows Dallas/Fort Worth on American Airlines, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines [S2].
  • American also sells DFW–SFO on its own site [S3]. Daily frequencies aren't confirmed here; check with your airline.

Which airport or terminal

  • At DFW: American uses gates across Terminals A–E; United and Frontier use Terminal E [S4].
  • At SFO: American is in Harvey Milk Terminal 1; United's domestic flights use Terminals 2 and 3 [S5].
  • International departures at SFO: Philippine Airlines, EVA Air, China Airlines, STARLUX and Japan Airlines use International Terminal A; United's international flights and ANA use International Terminal G [S5].

Connection tips if you're continuing on

  • United domestic to United international (Terminal 3 to International G) keeps you on one airline and one ticket, which helps if the domestic flight runs late.
  • American to a partner (for example JAL at International A) also works on one booking. Whether you can stay airside between terminals or must re-clear security isn't confirmed here; check with your airline.
  • Allow at least 3 hours on one ticket, and 4–5 hours on separate tickets (our guidance, not an official rule).
  • Coming home: you clear US immigration and customs at SFO, then re-check bags for DFW (standard US arrival process; check with your airline about bag recheck).
