Kuala Lumpur to Penang: flying it, and which KLIA terminal

Last checked

Flying it: nonstop options

  • Firefly (part of Malaysia Aviation Group) flies jet services from KLIA Terminal 1 and increased its Penang frequencies from October 2025 [S1]. Current flight times aren't confirmed here; check with your airline.
  • Malaysia Airlines sells flights to Penang [S2]; the page doesn't show a schedule, so frequency isn't confirmed; check with your airline.
  • AirAsia and Batik Air are reported to fly Kuala Lumpur–Penang too (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).
  • It's a short hop of about an hour (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).

Which airport or terminal

  • Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) has two terminals, T1 and T2 (formerly klia2), about 2 km apart. T2 is the low-cost terminal; Malaysia's Ministry of Transport lists AirAsia there [S3]. Firefly's jets use T1 [S1].
  • Subang (SZB) is a separate, older Kuala Lumpur airport. Check your ticket says KUL, not SZB, if you're connecting from an international flight (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).
  • Penang: Penang International Airport (PEN).

Connection tips if you're continuing on

  • Arriving from abroad at KLIA: you'll normally clear Malaysian immigration at KLIA before a domestic flight to Penang (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).
  • Terminal match matters. If your international flight lands at T2 and your Penang flight leaves from T1 (or the reverse), allow extra time to move between terminals. On separate tickets, allow at least 3 hours (our guidance, not an official rule).
  • Coming from Manila? See Manila to Penang and Manila to Kuala Lumpur.

Passport notes

  • US passports: no visa for short visits (90 days per the US State Department; not fully confirmed, so check with your airline); fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days before arrival (see the US passport cheat sheet).
  • Philippine passports: Malaysia's rules for Philippine passports aren't covered here; check with your airline.
