Bangkok to Chiang Mai: flying it, and Suvarnabhumi vs Don Mueang

Last checked

Flying it: nonstop options

  • Bangkok Airways operates direct flights from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Chiang Mai (CNX), about 1 hour 20 minutes [S1].
  • Thai Airways sells Bangkok–Chiang Mai on its own route page [S2] and also sells Don Mueang–Chiang Mai [S3]. Those pages don't show schedules, so frequency and which Thai flights use BKK vs DMK aren't confirmed; check with your airline.
  • Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet are reported to fly to Chiang Mai, mostly from Don Mueang (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).

Which airport or terminal

  • Bangkok has two airports that aren't connected airside: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the main international airport, and Don Mueang (DMK), used mainly by low-cost airlines. Bangkok Airways flies Chiang Mai from BKK [S1].
  • Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is about 3–4 km from the Old City [S1].

Connection tips if you're continuing on (international to domestic)

  • Arriving internationally at BKK: a Chiang Mai flight from BKK avoids a cross-town transfer. Whether you clear Thai immigration in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and whether bags are checked through, depends on your airline and ticket (not confirmed on an official page; check with your airline).
  • Arriving at BKK with an onward flight from DMK: that's a full airport change across Bangkok. You enter Thailand, collect bags and re-check. Allow at least 4–5 hours (our guidance, not an official rule).

Passport notes

  • US passports: 30 days visa-exempt in Thailand (the 60-day scheme was revoked from Sept 15, 2026); the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) applies (see the US passport cheat sheet).
  • Philippine passports: Thailand's rules for Philippine passports aren't covered here; check with your airline.
