At a glance

  • Hub of Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance). Turkish Airlines runs Touristanbul, a free city tour for international connections of 6–24 hours. [S1]
  • Airside hotel: YOTEL Istanbul Airport has 280 airside cabins (YOTELAIR) and 171 landside cabins. [S4]
  • Istanbul has a second airport, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Turkish Airlines lists it as a separate customs airport. [S2] Check which airport your tickets use.

Minimum connection times

  • Not found on an official airport or airline page. Check with your airline. Secondary reports say Turkish Airlines' online-booking conditions require 90 minutes for international connections, but we couldn't load the page to confirm.
  • One related official figure: Touristanbul requires at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of the tour and your next flight. [S1]
  • Our guidance (not an official rule): 90 minutes international to international on one ticket. Allow 3+ hours on separate tickets.

Terminals and transfers

  • International to international on one ticket (Turkish Airlines, a Star Alliance partner or a codeshare partner): go straight to your boarding gate with no further passport procedures. If you don't have a boarding pass, get one at the Transit Check-in counter. Checked bags go through to your destination. [S2]
  • Single ticket with a non-partner airline: go to that airline's transit check-in counter. You don't pass passport control. [S2]
  • Separate tickets: collect your bags in the international terminal and check in again at the airline counter. [S2] That means entering Türkiye, so you need visa eligibility.
  • International to domestic: you clear passport control at IST. [S2]

Transit visas

US passport holders

  • Visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (ordinary passports). US official passports need a visa. [S3]
  • Türkiye generally wants passports valid 6 months from arrival, and at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay. [S3]

Philippine passport holders

  • Ordinary passports need a visa. They can get a 30-day single-entry e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr only if they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit. [S3]
  • Diplomatic and official/service passports are visa-exempt for 30 days. [S3]
  • Staying airside on one ticket: Turkish Airlines says international transfer passengers go to the gate without passport procedures. [S2] Whether a Philippine passport holder needs anything else to transit airside wasn't confirmed on an MFA page, so check with your airline.

Leaving the airport and Touristanbul

  • Touristanbul (free): for Turkish Airlines passengers with an international-to-international connection of 6–24 hours whose flight times fit a tour. [S1]
    • Both flights must be on the same booking (PNR), on a Turkish Airlines ticket starting with 235. [S1]
    • Register at the Touristanbul desk on the Arrivals level at least 30 minutes before the tour. Getting there, including passport control, takes about 45 minutes. A second desk in the transfer area answers eligibility questions. [S1]
    • Tour times (schedule updated May 1, 2026): Sightseeing Tour 08:00–11:30 (a panoramic drive with no museum entry); half-day tour 08:30–15:00; evening tour 16:00–21:30; Bosphorus tour 18:30–23:00 (April 1–October 31 only). [S1]
    • You can't use Touristanbul and Turkish Airlines' Stopover hotel offer during the same layover. [S1]
    • You're responsible for any visa. [S1]
  • Turkish Airlines Stopover: TK also mentions free partner-hotel accommodation on stopovers. [S2] The conditions weren't checked, so check with your airline.

Lounges and sleep

  • YOTELAIR (airside): in Area A-B near LC Waikiki. Only international travelers can book it. Cabins book for 4+ hours. [S4]
  • YOTELAIR Recharge Cabins: bookable by the hour, with shared showers, opposite the iGA Lounge entrance (one floor up). Walk-in only. [S4]
  • YOTEL landside: opposite Check-in Area P. Anyone can book it. [S4]
  • iGA Lounge: location referenced by the airport [S4]; access terms weren't checked.

Layover ideas by length

Editorial suggestions, not official guidance.

  • Under 6 hours: stay airside. Grab a YOTELAIR Recharge Cabin by the hour. [S4]
  • 6–12 hours: on a TK ticket (235) with one PNR, book Touristanbul. US passports enter visa-free. [S1][S3] Philippine passports need a visa or a qualifying e-Visa. [S3]
  • Overnight: YOTELAIR airside (4+ hours) [S4]. Or check TK's Stopover offer for a partner hotel in the city. [S2]

Pitfalls

  1. IST vs SAW: Istanbul has two airports. Separate tickets across them mean entering Türkiye. [S2]
  2. Touristanbul needs one PNR on a 235 ticket. Partner-airline tickets don't qualify. [S1]
  3. Allow 45 minutes to reach the Arrivals desk, plus at least 1 h 25 min after the tour before your flight. [S1]
  4. Philippine passports: the e-Visa only works if you hold a qualifying US, UK, Ireland or Schengen visa or residence permit. [S3]
